Have you ever hurt someone unintentionally? I did. And it did not feel good at all. Thankfully, this was someone who felt comfortable enough to let me know. I had been teaching an aromatherapy class and had light-heartedly brought out this person’s issues with controlling situations. Well, I thought it was light-hearted. She did not. And it hurt her. She made other accusations about things I had said in previous encounters, and I felt bad that I had been so insensitive toward her. I pondered this as I walked in nature and I was graced with a gift of a hawk feather. I believe Archangel Michael, who helps clear negativity and releases us from fear and doubt, was present and guided me to a loving response to this situation. I instantly began sending her loving kindness: May you be well. May you be happy. May you be at peace. May you be forgiving. May you feel my love.
Later, as I meditated with the ancient essence of Spikenard, this message came through:
This work isn’t easy and it is not for the faint hearted. You are strong and are called to do the difficult task of bringing others to the place of their own sovereignty. Some are ready and some will resist. Some who desire to be well aren’t willing to do the work to get there yet. These opportunities are making you stronger. Do not doubt your mission. You are called to do this. Keep trusting as we are guiding you. Stand in your Truth and don’t waiver. You cannot control others so trust that their journey is THEIR journey. Love them with all of your heart. Then there will be no room for doubts! You are not a failure and you did not succeed. It just is as it is. Love above all else.
Healing on all levels--physically, emotionally and spiritually--is a process. I cannot make anyone forgive me. I can only humble myself, admit my wrongdoings, and trust there is a lesson in each situation for all who are involved. Take a moment to reflect on a person or situation where you unintentionally hurt someone. It is never too late to come to a place of humility. Know you will become a stronger person, a person of integrity, if you can send that person unconditional loving kindness in whatever way is comfortable for you. This is how you become your authentic, sovereign self. This is who we are all meant to be.
Loving Kindness (Metta) is a Buddhist practice to develop impartial and unconditional love. Initially taught by the Buddha, it exists in most ancient spiritual disciplines: The following is a simplified version:
We begin by sending loving kindness to ourselves first:
May I be well. May I be happy. May I be peaceful. May I be forgiven for any wrongdoings I have done to myself or others. May I be free from suffering. (Repeat until you feel it.)
Once we feel love for ourselves, then we can send it out to others:
May you be well. May you be happy. May you be peaceful. May you be forgiven for any wrongdoings you have done to yourself or others. May you be free from suffering.
You can do this for each person who comes to mind. Customize it to fit the loving kindness you wish to send out. You can take it one step further and offer it to people you don’t know. And ultimately, to all the world. This practice is reported to reduce irritation, anger, and hatred, while improving patience and the ability to forgive. Think about what a wonderful world this would be if we all practiced loving kindness each day of our lives!
